So that you can prepare for your driving lessons and tests, Life Driver Training has provided the following Tips and Useful links for your covenience.
Applying for a Provisional Licence
Before you can learn to drive a car, you must apply for a provisional driving licence.
You can apply for your first provisional driving licence for a car, using the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's (DVLA) secure and easy to use online service at www.dvla.gov.uk, or you can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post OfficeŽ branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £45.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD or you may be able to use the premium checking service.
The Theory Test
You should arrive at the test centre in plenty of time. Once you have registered at reception you will go through to the test room. You may not take anything into the room with you; all personal items must be stored in the lockers provided.
Once you are in the test room you may not talk to or distract other candidates. The computer screen will display your name and the category of test you are taking. If you have any problems during the theory test, you should raise your hand to attract the attention of the test invigilator.
You must take the following items with you. If you do not, they may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.
- Both parts of your valid signed GB or NI (Northern Ireland) driving licence.
- If you have an old-style paper licence you must bring both your paper licence and a valid passport.
- Your appointment letter.
Hazard Perception Test
This new test will be taken at the same time as the theory test and will take about an extra 15 minutes. The object is to identify up to 15 hazards as quickly as possible from 14 video clips, and you will have to pass this before being able to do the practical test.
The Practical Test
The Driving Test for car drivers is about 40 minutes long. During this time the examiner will:
- 1. Check your eyesight by getting you to read a number plate at the required distance.
- 2. Ask you to show or tell them how to conduct certain vehicle safety checks.
- 3. Direct you to drive around a test route while incorporating two of the set manoeuvres and optionally the emergency stop.
Car Maintenance
As part of the practical test you would be expected to be able to check the following on your vehicle: lights, brakes, oil, tyre pressure etc. As part of your structured learning schedule you will be shown how to check these so that you are prepared when the time comes.
